Catch-up bookkeeping · Vancouver, BC
Behind on your books?
Months of unreconciled transactions, receipts in different places, or a year-end you keep putting off. DSJM helps owner-managed businesses across Greater Vancouver work out what needs fixing and bring the records up to date.
Free 15 to 20 minute consultation with David Moon, CPA.
A practical starting point
You do not need tidy books to make the first call.
Tell David where the records stopped making sense, which software you use and whether a filing or lender deadline is approaching. The first conversation is about understanding the gap and agreeing a realistic next step.
- Your bank or credit card accounts have not been reconciled for months.
- You have changed bookkeepers and are unsure what was completed.
- Transactions are sitting uncategorized, duplicated or in the wrong accounts.
- You need reliable records before corporate tax work or financial statements can begin.
What the work can include
A cleanup scoped to the records you actually have.
Starting point
Establish what is complete
Identify the periods needing attention, the accounts involved and the last reliable reconciliations or financial statements. Separate work already completed from work still outstanding.
Reconciliation
Match the books to the statements
Review bank and credit card activity against the accounting records, investigate differences and identify missing supporting information.
Corrections
Resolve gaps and inconsistent entries
Review uncategorized transactions, duplicate entries and account balances. Questions that need your input are identified rather than filled in with guesses.
Next step
Prepare for year-end or ongoing bookkeeping
Agree what the completed work will support: a year-end file, more current management information or a move into regular bookkeeping. Tax filings and financial statements are identified separately in the engagement scope.
We work with QuickBooks Online and Xero. Describe your current setup on the call so we can establish what is practical before agreeing the work.
How it works
A clear scope before the cleanup starts.
01
Describe the backlog
Tell David roughly how far behind you are, how many bank and card accounts you use and which deadlines matter. You do not need to send financial documents with the website enquiry.
02
Agree the work and fee
The scope identifies the periods, records and corrections involved, what is included and what still depends on missing information. The fee is agreed in writing before work begins.
03
Complete the work and plan ahead
The agreed cleanup is completed with your input where records need explanation. Discuss whether you want ongoing bookkeeping afterwards or support with the next year-end.
Common questions
Getting caught up, explained.
How much does catch-up bookkeeping cost?
The fee depends on the periods outstanding, transaction volume, number of accounts, quality of the records and corrections needed. Cleanup is quoted separately from ongoing monthly bookkeeping. See our ongoing bookkeeping prices for the regular service.
How long will it take?
That depends on the backlog and how much information is available. Mention any deadline on the first call. Timing is discussed with the scope; missing statements or unresolved questions can affect the work.
What should I gather?
Be ready to describe your accounting software, the accounts you use and the last period completed. Bank and card statements, invoices, receipts and prior financial statements may be needed once the engagement is agreed. Use the enquiry form to describe the situation, rather than sending account credentials or financial documents.
What if tax filings are behind too?
Say which filings you believe are outstanding and whether you have received correspondence. Bookkeeping and filing work need to be scoped together so the next steps are clear. Our corporate tax and GST and PST services explain the related work.
Do I have to sign up for monthly bookkeeping?
The engagement scope is agreed before work starts. Tell David whether you need help with the backlog only or also want ongoing monthly or quarterly bookkeeping.
Start where you are
Tell us what is behind.
A short description of your business, the last period completed and any approaching deadline is enough to start the conversation.
